Teixeira Duarte executes new bridge over the River Mondego as part of the Eurovelo route

Figueira da Foz City Council has awarded the contract to build the ‘Mondego River Bridge - Eurovelo 1 - Atlantic Coast Route’ to Teixeira Duarte - Engenharia e Construções (TD-EC). The contract is worth 7 million euros and has an overall deadline of 16 months. It consists of building a bridge over the central channel of the River Mondego, with a view to integrating it into the Eurovelo 1 Route (mobility for cyclists and pedestrians) and road access for light and emergency vehicles, whose car traffic will be reversible via traffic lights. The contract also includes the ramps connecting the two junctions of the bridge to the existing roads.
Eurovelo 1 - Atlantic Coast Route is a long-distance cycle route that forms part of the Eurovelo network, linking Norway to Portugal, with a total length of 9,000 kilometres. In Portugal, the route runs along the coast, from Vila Real de Santo António in the Algarve to Caminha in the north of the country, crossing various regions and landscapes.
The bridge's abutments are next to the dykes of the river's central channel, built in the 1980s as part of the Baixo Mondego Hydraulic Development, which gives the bridge a total length of 395 metres. The total useful width of the deck is 6.50 metres, of which 3.0 metres is for the pedestrian path and 3.50 metres for the road.
The vast majority of the work that makes up this contract will be carried out using TD-EC's own resources, including Geotechnics and Foundations, the Formwork Operating Centre and Metalworking. This is a complex, technically challenging project that provides an opportunity to demonstrate the skills that characterise the company so well as a true ‘Engineering House’.
